It starts at 1:50, (you can skip the charity pitch), watch and listen as a Jamaican mother speaks about the challenges she face on a daily basis to provide the basic needs for her children.[youlist vid=”hdBp6qGd6oY”]
Honestly I have mixed feelings on this one, but I am not as naïve as my American friend. She thinks that the Caribbean is paradise. According to her we have great beaches, warm sunshine all-year round and friendly people.
But I had to remind her that although she is 100% correct, there is another reality; it’s poverty. The great beaches and warm sunshine are free for people in the Caribbean but it remains a challenge for many seeking access to basic shelter and food.
This is not an excuse for this Jamaican mother. She must take some responsibility for her situation. The video shows her with three kids, no mention of a father. She said her mother had 9 children. Why didn’t she learn from her mother’s experiences?
Maybe some form of contraception would have led to fewer kids. Maybe she went through a major crisis in her life and things went from bad to worst. There are a lot of maybe. There are many questions that I would love to ask but let me not be quick to judge.
For sure cases like these teaches us to think about consequences, for every action there is a reaction. We can’t assume that help is on the way, we need to at least make some effort.
I hope this Jamaican mother reflects on her situation and move in a positive direction at least for the benefit of her kids.
