The stench, the pile of garbage scattered around the city of Georgetown is unbearable. How many times citizens of Georgetown, Guyana have been told that help is on the way or so it may seem. There is only so far the people of Guyana can go before they will say enough is enough.[youlist vid=”QWmJGfLJOJI” showinfo=”0″]
Almost every month the government sends out another press release. If we tally all the millions of dollars committed to this garbage problem, we would would be picking up money instead of garbage. Surely, this task is not rocket science, it shouldn’t be this complicaated. Its not as if garbage is hiding somewhere, follow your nose and you will find it.
So why is this task so difficult? Ask the government officials who appear to be living in another world (money fixes everything) or some of the local business owners who are too cheap to properly dispose of their garbage and yes, local citizens who through laziness or lack of pride, toss garbage everywhere and anywhere convenient.
But the government needs to take leadership and at least develop a realistic plan. Don’t expect ordinary citizens to care about the garbage problem when the stench and piles of garbage have now become the norm? At some point people will no longer care as they lose a sense of pride in their community.
